Compressed natural gas
-
Compressed natural gas (CNG) is a safe, cost-effective alternative for gasolines and diesel.
-
As 65 million CNG vehicles were predicted to be on the road worldwide by 2020.

DEFINITION
Compressed natural gas (CNG) is a colorless and tasteless alternative for fuel. It is composed of approximately 95 percent methane and compressed to pressures around 3,600 pounds per square inch (psi). One thousand cubic feet of natural gas has the same amount of energy as 7.20 U.S. gallons of diesel.
A CLEAN ALTERNATIVE
There are more than 110,000 CNG vehicles, including one in five of all new transit busses, operating successfully in the United States. A large reason for the popularity of CNG derives from it’s clean-burning properties. Per unit of energy, natural gas contains less carbon than any other fossil fuel. Compared to gasoline or diesel powered vehicles, CNG vehicles reduce greenhouse emissions by 22 to 29 percent.
EMISSION REDUCTIONS
The following numbers reflect the potential reductions offered by CNG, in comparison to conventional gasoline.
-
Carbon monoxide emissions: Reductions of 90 to 97 percent
-
Carbon dioxide emissions: Reductions of 25 percent
-
Nitrogen oxide emissions: Reductions of 35 to 60 percent
-
Nonmethane hydrocarbon emissions: Reductions of 50 to 75 percent
HIGH SAFETY
Due to strict safety standards, compressed natural gas vehicles are as safe as vehicles powered by gasoline. CNG is a flammable gas with a narrow flammability range. It is only flammable when a mixture of air and CNG contains 5 to 15 percent natural gas. CNG is nontoxic and poses no threat to land or water if spilled.
AFFORDABILITY
CNG generally costs up to 40% less than gasoline or diesel. The chart below reflects the study results from a side-by-side comparison of 10 CNG fueled cars and 10 gasoline fueled cars of the same make and model.

The study found the fuel economy of CNG and gasoline cars to be identical. CNG fueled cars had lower operating costs (25 percent less), lower average fuel costs (32 percent less), and lower maintenance costs (15% less) than the gasoline fueled cars.
